Test it for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. If it has ammonia and nitrite chuck it. If the nitrates aren't too high use it.
You can try to feed it like you did that would be your best hope. As for quantity i would just do very small squares and hope it gets to them.

That should be fine. You should run no more than 10 times your sump's volume through the sump.
