Welcome to 3reef. I don't have much knowledge of ropefish, but the tank size is definitely an issue. A fish of that size would definitely pollute...
Definitely shop around and check out their work before making a decision. See if you talk to some of their customers and see what the customers say.
Go ahead and get rid of the airpump. Buy a small circulation pump and aim it at the surface to promote gas exchange if you have pH problems.

If you can get a refractometer, they are more accurate and the reading doesn't drift with age as a hydrometer does.
