You should always use RO/DI water for salt tanks. Need to get a TDS checker too.

Well you live too far away for me to help. Just take you time and engineer it out first before you build.
Drill it. Do the bottom edge of the side glass as the very bottom glass in most aquariums is tempered.

There is nothing in there to skim. "I" always wait until about 6 months after the system is running to start the skimmer. You will be removing spores...
