In my opinion it is better to loose water due to evaporation than loosing your live stock to high temperature, I would just keep enough ro/di water...
I've only use coralife salt and this is what my water looks like

you can also use LR or refuge rubble dead or alive, and trust me something will definitely grow in them and also make a great place for pods and such!

it all depends on how aggressive your other tank mates are, smaller fish normally adapt better than older ones, and there is always the chance of one...

I use red sea mg. test also, works well and is reasonable enough!
