It's a toss up actually. Sometimes from being turned on/off they have a tendency to run backwards. And they can be noisy.

I agree with your assumption. As you keep putting new LR into your tank your getting more die off. But don't panic! Just keep up with the water...
I feed Rods Complete 1x weekly and Coral Extacy 1x monthly. Other then that it's all about water changes :)
And....by vacuuming your substrate you may be stirring things up just a bit much. Causing the nitrate spikes.
First of all a ph of 8.0 is fine. What are you using for filtration? For whatever reason your not exporting the nitrates via your water changes....

I use a fine mist spray bottle to help dilute it and to help it along its journey back into the tank :)
A sump is basically a place for added water volume, housing heaters, skimmers and for easier top off. Have you given any thought into a refugium?
Please, what 6 very small fish do you have? Also how long has your tank been set up?
