    Boiling rock is always strongly discouraged. All kinds of nasties can become vaporized, which you would then breath in. Bleach would be safer IMO.

    If you have an ATO, evap is great to keep a tank cool as mentioned. But you are right, without it, you want to avoid it as much as possible.
