Sounds like your typical, non-reliable, hydrometer. Refractometers are relatively cheap, easier/cleaner to use, and magnitudes more reliable.
I'd agree. If not that, I'd wonder if one side is warmer/cooler (sun?)... that came off as over sensitive. i'd bet most folks don't have a clue...
