    Mineral mud is pretty much an iron-rich substrate that helps algae grow faster. Very fine grained, so it gives an anaerobic layer in less depth.

    You could hang the skimmer on the fuge, instead of on the tank. That way, you don't see the skimmer at all when you're looking at the tank.
