You try running some GAC. Lights out would be a good method as well. Just black out your tank for 3 -4 days and you should be good to go.
If you water wasn't cloudy prior, then I would say that where you cloudiness came from (disturbing the sandbed that is).
I honestly don't know if the bacteria cultures are the same from FW to SW, so I'm not sure putting the filter sock in your FW tank would really help....

If it was more porous and weighed the same, it would take up more room. Just saying lol. You just elaborated what I said lol.
What is Alkalinity supposed to be at? My test kit says something 1.7 - 2.8 is normal and I usually fall in the middle of that range.
As long as he is eating good and still looks healthy. I would ask them to feed him for you before they bag him.
