    It likely has a crack or leak that let water into the motor compartment. Either make them fulfill the warranty if there still is one, or toss and buy...

    You can't use a speed controller or dimmer with most normal pumps. They (Hydor, Tunze off the top of my head) sell special ones meant for controllers.
