i would not use a sponge, put some small live rock fragments in there, with carbon and some chaeto and your good to go.
take a small piece of live rock from another tank and crush it into tiny bits and use that for media, take the bio balls out.
it would be better for you to gather some rocks from outside and use them as media then keep the bioballs in, in other words, take them out.
