Generally not good since evaporation varies and therefore your kalk dose will be inconsistent.
Sounds like vermitid snails. Pull the rocks out if possible and seal the ends with gel super glue. If not use epoxy to seal the tubes.

If you can, get them without black shoulder patches these are much more aggressive and likely to kill each other off. Feed them 2 or 3 times a day...
