    An electrical engineer offered to make me an LED unit using an arduino chip for $50 or so. we're goin to work up a prototype first.

    Get a 4-bulb unit imo. Gives you much more flexibility down the road. You may start with soft coral, but an sps will catch your eye down the road.

    Sounds good. I think you'll enjoy it. FYI, my house is 74 and my heater is maxed out (think it's broken) and my tank reaches 79-80 daily.
