    Overkill for Overflow??

    You will need plumbing to go from the overflow down to the sump and plumbing to go from the return up into the DT. Most people use PVC.

    does total water volume affect how many fish you can get?

    It depends on the fish. If its a fish that needs space to swim or a fish that is territorial than water volume means nothing.
