depending on how old yer tank setup is it could be part of the cycle, if yer tanks a couple months old how ever id just chuck some carbon in yer...
ive had a ehiem canister filter that has never broken down in 5 years
i had my tank manufactured to my custom design, most lfs do that just means u will have to wait instead of buying 1 off the shelf

i found with my clowns after i added a 2nd to the tank i had same issues with all this the female hated the new guy who was less then half his size...
the university breed clowns for research they use a 3 foot tank and a teracota pot i hear they breed like rabbits;D im sure theres a lil more to it...
IMO macro algie will work allthough last time i added macro algie into my tank with my tang the macro was gone in hours, atleast my tang beefed up...

my first marine tank set up was from FW to salt, and i used the gravel from my FW setup to take the cheap way out, it looked crap and i changed it...
if u havea leak in your tank u should be able to see it quite easily because there should be salt creep around it, thats what i found any ways my...
i too have a wet/dry sump and i just run carbon above the bio balls and check it every week works fine for me
the reason for having a larger diameter for yer overflow is because the water free falls and is not under any presure so its a good idea to give it...
theres a good fish trap u can make if u search fish trap on this forum im sure u will find it very simple to make and it works really easily and...
my shroom has moved about 4 inches from where i put it in the tank and has detatched from the rock i baught it on, it has followed up the rock wall...
i personally had a problem with the jebo hang on back skimmer the rubber seal at the top after 3 months crapped out and started leaking no matter...
id wait get yer new tank and get it drilled with a propper over flow box in it, t5 lights are ok for yer system, i have a BTA in my tank under t5's...
i think most people use 1'1/4 for overflow could be wrong aslong as the diameter is bigger then yer return line u should be ok, really though if u...
u dont "need" a sump at all how ever they are a great place to hide away yer heater skimmer etc, as far as design an empty old fish tank is fine...
not out of the question IMO bio balls are used in your system in the same way live rock is bio balls how ever hold alot of crap as well so id make...
the problem with the above IMO is yer always gonna be adjusting the gate valves to get the over flows equal meaning theres higher risk to flood yer...
