I have seen no mention of you using RO water? If your using tap water that is your problem.
your nitrates arent that bad. In a 16g tank a water change would fix that easily just so you are aware, nitrates arent really deadly to fish, and...
just to mix things up a little bit, im gonna disagree with a few people on this thread. I dont think a water change during a cycle is a good idea.
gexx is right, for now just se how it is, if it starts to disintergrate whip it out. I reckon the lfs probably tore it, id be tempted to take it back.
