All those fish eat shrimp larvae, but 1000000:1 you don't have peppermint shrimp larvae. I highly suspect you have mysid shrimp.

Typically the tubing wears out and needs to be replaced. The check valve IMO should be replaced. Cheap item, but failure isn't cheap.
