Lol - the dwarf pipefish may work for like a 2.5 or 5g pico for sure. And I think honestly the Hi-fin Red Banded Pistol Goby would be fine even without a pistol shrimp. My pistol shrimp in my 29g biocube originally would spread sand everywhere but now it's only once every two days I notice sand buildup on one of my rocks. But 1g is soo tiny, I'm looking at a milk-jug thinking wow.

I really love your DIY rock and LED's. This is a really great thread. I definitely want to goto the LFS and pick up some rubble so I can start making my own rocks. Put them in the fuge, make them turn purple, return for extra store credits.(especially since I can get rubble for free)

Keep us up to date with any idea's for additions, I'm still a huge fan for the goby/pistol shrimp combo especially since the Randall's shrimp only gets about 1"-1.5" max size and the goby is the same.

    Subscribed!

I am thinking of doing a pico myself (probably starting after the summer since I want it in my office). You mentioned the lights were able to keep things growing in another tank. I'm assuming this means you kept coral under them? What types?

    Thanks!

Zechenia i kept a few zoanthids and palys, some frogspawn, favia, blastos, a small monti cap (i didnt grow a ton but i also wasnt doing any dosing and very few water changes in that tank so that probably had something to do with it) and a few other things but i cant quite remember what all the rest was. but my frogspawn would be huge and the monti cap would have all its little polyps extended and all the other corals were nice and open so i know they liked the light.

and you can expect another update tonight around 6-630 it wont be anything huge but ive got some ideas i wanna throw at you guys and see what you think

You could definitely do a pair of dwarf pipes or horses. I think it's a fine size. But they cannot be housed with the goby that's too much competition for food.

if you can grow euphyllia then that's pretty awesome little LEDs! as long as it's putting out PAR it should be good to grow most lps and softies i'd assume

ashevillan you should see those things in real life lol one could light up a room decently and 3 or 4 would probably be about equal normal light bulb if i could figure out a reflector for them they'd be even better

cut up a small plastic cup so that you get the arc you want -- then cover in tin foil

at least that's what I used for reflectors when i had my closet green house up and running with my 250w High-pressure Sodium Sun-System(someone eventually broke in and stole my whole set up)

Lucky people aren't as addicted to reef as they are to reefer so I don't really worry about someone coming in and stealing my LED's (even though I'm sure they can grow more than just a reef)

Seems like those LED's would be good for so many uses, personal defense(place on your chest and backpack with a easy push button while on hikes or late night walks[this will light the attackers face blinding them giving you time to escape or call the police] they have these already but they are expensive), accent lighting in the kitchen under cabinets, pico tanks, refugium lighting, ect.

+1 great thread and again i love the diy rock

wouldn't the goby be more aggressive than the dwarf pipefish? they seem so docile. my tank mates are pretty aggressive eaters too(flametail blenny, occy clown, six-line wrasse) but my hi fin red banded goby still manages to get his fair share, i will sometimes place small bits of food or pellets in front of his borrow so he can get his fill and also feed the pistol shrimp

i still feel like you could do the goby and the pipefish but depending on the aggression for food, you'd just have to make sure you're feeding everyone - i think i've also seen that dwarf pipefish eat copepods all day just like dragonnettes and six-lines, so as long as you don't have something eating your pods I think the pipefish will be okay even with your tiny little goby.

but i've also seen other gobies that are less than 1" long and are very mysterious because they are so small.

How do you plan on doing WC's? Like one mason jar(16fl oz) a week? Then for top-off's you add like a shot glass(1-2fl oz) per day? Seems like maintenance on a smaller scale will actually have to be more precise to keep parameters in check?

NICE! Lighting was definitaly my biggest issue. Besides the tank, I had everything else I needed laying around the house. Justifying the $ for the lighting was the hard part :)
