I am going to experiment and trying something different. I have a 2 year old son and my fiance is in college. Most of you can relate. I am BROKE.
My plan is to build a frag tank from whatever I can get my hands on either free or cheap. I plan on using t5 lighting, which is also a variable of the experiment. Money is obviously a variable. I currently only have the tank (gave to me).
Most people whohave frag tanks use MH lighting, skimmers, etc. I am going to try something different just for the fun of it. If the frags dont to well they will go back into my display. No harm no foul.

I will document well, currently I am not going to post any pictures (its just a plain basic ten gallon tank for now) LOL

Feel free to discuss, help with suggestions, etc. I want you all to be a part of this. I am a hardcore 3reefer and have came to know some of you pretty well. Thanks for your help and input.

Any tips on fragging or frag tanks, PM me, post here, whichever!

You ask for advice.... what help do you need? I don't want to be redundant and tell you things you know... Do you need lighting advice, fragging advice, or otherwise....

Is the frag tank going to be connected to the main tank?

Just one question, if you are short on funds yet want a frag tank, why not superglue some egg crate to a magfloat an have a movable frag station in your DT, that way you don't really need to buy anything extra, you just need to put corals in a slightly different spot than they are in now....
Honestly, thats what I would do. OR if you don't like that look, buy the frag stations that are out there, they are made of ceramic and are meant to hold frags yet look like rocks in the tank. The $13-25 you spend will sure trump the cost of the 10 gal tank!!

    Happy fragging!

Glad Dr. Fragenstein saw this :)

I know lighting, etc. Mostly I need fragging advice. Thats my biggest fear.
I have read "how to frag this" etc for many different species. My first shot will be at a large xenia rock I have. Here is an older pic of it:

I have some ceramic tile left over from doing my floor. Can this work as frag plates?

What is a good way to frag xenia? Cut it and peel it from the rock and then use fishing line to tie to a frag tile? That seems to be what I have heard. I plan on doing about 3 or so polyps per frag from the xenia per tile/rubble.

I also have mushrooms growing (you an sort of see them in that pic above). The "mouths" seem really small to disect and get a piece of. I have heard mushrooms will pretty much grow no matter what. I would like to try my hand at these as well. Any tips on mushrooms would be great.

As far as doing the ten gallon. I wanted to eventually spread this into a much larger operation. Mostly for local fraggers/friends. Also, not sure I like the look of a frag rack in my current tank (it is sort of small, 37 gal). On top of that, I can not keep my damsel out of my corals. I can't get rid of the damsel, it was a present from my girlfriend when I was sick. One of the only nice things she has ever done for me LOL. The hermits seem to like them as well but they dont bother too much. Last night a peppermint shrimp was cleaning my frogspawn, worried me. They are definately peppermint though (not camel).
I am still kicking around the frag rack but not 100% sure. This money for the frag tank could go into the nice deal i found on the 75G for my display tank. Thanks for looking Dr. Frag and thanks for the help!

Edit: The frag tank will be independent from the display tank. Not connected.

I still need to learn about fragging though.
