AHHH! My 10 gallon nano is going through some crazy nitrate levels. All i have in the there is a mantis shrimp. Why are my nitrates so high?? And what can i do about them? I already did a water change. Took them down and they're right back up again.

    How much live rock?

Chaeto would help, though it's hard to put a fuge on a 10g.

It's possible (though highly, highly, highly, amazingly highly unlikely that for whatever reason the nitrate consuming bacteria never took off. I'd suggest one of those bacteria packs that "kickstart" cycles. If you have sufficient LR, and LS. There's a CRUCIAL caveat here. That bacteria can kill off what you have already, so using it would require careful monitoring. Just in case the new bacteria turns the old into a snack.

Please FILL OUT and POST AS A REPLY the from in my sig. It'll help us further with these questions. If you can't test your water 1. shame on you 2. take a sample to your LFS.

Instead of using cheato - why dont you decorate the tank with some showy type algaes such as miadens hair or Halimeda. They'll absorb the nitrates and look good!

Reef cleaners do a lot of macro algaes
ReefCleaners.org | Clean Up Crews and Macro Algae - Plants/Macroalgae

this link takes you to the macro algae section - they are sponsors of this site

in additon depending on your nitrate level and your existing filtration method
you could look at chemical filtration options of which Sea Chem's Purigen is one

    Seachem. Purigen

again sponsors of this site - and many people have had great success with this chemical filter media for Nitrate reduction
