So do I need a separate tank for a sump and a refugium? if so how big of a tank do I need for a refugium and do you know of any threads that show with photos what a good refugium set up looks like?

You could use 2 10g tanks but I think it would be easier to use a 20L. Skimmer section on one side, fuge on the other, return section in the middle.

Bama, a 10g is kinda hard to drill isn't it?

the 10 would probably just effectively add 5 gallon water volume, since you would not run the water to the top of the tank so you have room for water to rise when the return pump is turned off.

I have a 2.5 gall tank on top of a 10 gallon tank. The 2.5 is drilled and I siliconed an overflow skimmer for a nano cube over a bulkhead that I put into the 2.5 after drilling a hole in it. I have a ball valve on the overflow pipe from the display tank that I T off of to the refugium. I use the valve to control flow to the refugium. The water from the refugium simply overflows out of the overflow box, through a flexible hose, back into the sump.
