What's the smallest return section I could get away with if it was 6" deep?

If you want to put your return in the middle than you would want to "T" your return line not the overflow. Search my name and you can see pics of my 10 gallon sump. I would personally go this way: overflow/skimmer section together>fuge>return. that way you dont have to "t" any return lines or anything. Do you already have the skimmer? Your going to be extremely limited on space and should forgo the idea of having a refugium as one that small will make zero impact on your system and would be a wast of space. If you dont have your skimmer yet, look for a dual application, one that could be ran both in sump and HOB such as the aquamedic turboflotor or eshopps. That way you can set it up outside of the skimmer area and not have to sacrifice space. seriously though search my name and find my hello thread. It will give you an idea of what you want to do.

Well thanks for the info. Although I've already built my sump/fuge. I will be going with the tunze 9002 for my skimmer. It will fit in my overflow section, seeing how the foot print is a huge 4"x2" lol. And just curious but why wouldn't my fuge work? It will be 6.5"Lx10"Wx8"H is that not big enough? Well even if it isn't its still gonna be my fuge bc its already built.

I think your fuge will work fine. Bigger is usually better but there a lot of people that have success with a HOB DIY fuge that is considerably smaller than what you are using. How big is the DT?
