Typically when people see Tangster has responded they consider the matter solved. He's a tough act to follow as far as knowledge goes. That's why you see people defending him (he's been doing this longer than some here have been alive).

If you use the search tool ^^^ up there for "Sump" or "Refugium" you will find a wealth of posts on the subject. Personalized responses don't come as quickly as you may hope sometimes, likely because your post was pushed off the new post list by other posts before it could be bumped. If you think a post has been missed just reply to your message with a "bump" in the message box and someone will help you out. Just use the bump with discretion.

Well, I thought it was as simple as pumping water into a tank (my 10 gallon), and simultaneously pumping it back out. Of course, eventually I would have ended up with a big pool of water on the floor. Apparently you can't rely on two pumps to move the exact same amount of water over a period of time. And of course if one of the pumps failed.....

So, my plan now is to just hook up the sump that comes with the set up I am buying. The tank is drilled and I have space in the stand for the sump. Here's the set-up:

    1. All-glass 75 RR tank stand and canopy
    2. ASM G-3 with sedra 5000 pump
    3. Tek T-5 fixture 4x54w
    4. Mag 9.5 return
    5. Stealth heater
    6. 2 Korilia 4 power heads
    7. APC power back-ups
    8. Coralife power center with duel timers
    9. Refractometer
    10. 20g sump/fuge

Going to pick it up right now as a matter of fact ;D. Now I just have to figure out how to set everything up!

Sounds like a killer set-up. If you need any help during any stage of the set-up, feel free to ask 3reef. If your questions aren't answered as specifically as you need let us know. There's no such thing as a stupid newbie question. I'd love to help you get your tank going. When I was a newbie to this forum and got a reply from any one of the big dogs I'd pry, pry, pry for more info out of them while you have their attention. It was actually a score to have tangster chime in.

If it's reef ready does it have an overflow box or something like that built into it? If so you let the return pump set your flow rate and then let gravity handle your drain. If you have level "x" that anything over that flows down the drain to your sump and/or fuge then however much the return pump is putting into the tank you'll have the same amount going over the wall and down your drain tubes.

Yes you'll have a little evaporation and such to account for, but that comes a little later in the design. I'm setting up my first tank now myself and the folks on this site have been invaluable in helping me along the way - not that many reefers here in rural Nebraska so I don't have the opportunity to go look at other setups very often.

Great, thanks for the help! I'm sure I will have many questions in the coming weeks.
