What would the best powerhead setup for a 115 gallon tank be? I've heard of vortech but those things are expensive. What's the best powerhead in a lower price range... and how many do you think I would need?

I'm looking to put in corals, anemones.

What are the dimensions? Tunze's and vortechs are amazing at giving you plenty of flow / wave making abilities and looking great doing it. Koralia's are a good budget choice, and so are maxijets. There is a koralia knock-off on e-bay that are supposedly half the price but have great reviews.

It really depends on what type of corals you want to keep. Sps generally require higher flow rates. I would get 3-4 powerheads so that you can have a few dead spots. The more, the better, but they do take up room. Koralias are good, I've a used a couple. Don't get anything below a K3 though for that sized tank. I currently have a vortech MP 40 and love it, when I upgrade I plan on getting another one.

Alright, is a protein skimmer absolutely needed?

There are no Absolutes in reef keeping.

    But generally, YES.

if only biological and mechanical filtration are used, you will end up having a problem with algae, IME, no skimmer on 100g, LOTS of green hair
