Ehiems are the standard. Solid pumps and pretty quiet. A 1262 will do. You can look at Sicce Syncra pumps. Supposed to be silent. Same price as a Ehiem. I do not have first hand experience, but interesting.

Second... you don't need nearly as much flow as you say. you only "need" 4-5 times sump volume. Regardless of the number... all you are doinf presumedly is supplying a skimmer and a fuge. A fuge you are looknin at 100-150 gph at most and a skimmer for your tank you ae looking at 400 gph at most. so 550 gph say 600 at most. So all yo uneed is a pump that will give you 600 gph at 4' of head typically and you are looking in the neigbourhood of 900-1000 gph.

Third... only air cooled pumps transfer less heat to the tank. Most external pumps are still water cooled internally and still transfer most of their heat to the water.

Last... if you want silent... then a Herbi overflow is a must. Look at the article in my sig or just google it. It's the only way to go for many reasons.

I don't have experience with the other pumps, but I have run the same mag-drive 18 on my tank as a return pump for the past 6 years 24/7 nonstop. It has the perfect amount of flow, is plenty quiet, and been trouble free.

I tee off my overflow drains into the sump which I use as a refugium, and into my Reef Octopus DNW-150 inline (not in sump) skimmer. Works great!!

I recently purchased an Eheim 1262 for my frag tank. Was a little pricey but is the most quiet pump I have ever owned. Also the towel idea is OK but I found using a piece of wetsuit material works the best without the possibility of getting nasty. You can even use a mouse pad but make sure its a rubber one.8)

Ok, well the mag drive can be used both ways. Mine sits in the water in my sump. I have a section of my sump dedicated to it and my reactor pumps. I can't hear it with the stand doors closed.

internals ehim or ocean runner would be my choice i have ran mag drives with good sucess i like to run externals for some reason i have run iwaki 20rlxt as well as the 30rlxt both were silent and thay were not cooled by the tank water i just fear a pump going haywire and superheating the tank

i like the price and reviews of the ocean runner there are a fiew members that run them and absolutely love them

i have herd some complaints of the newer mag drives but i havent seen an issue but thay do run hot that could be an issue if you live in warm climates with a couple halides could spell disaster . to me there still good pumps i just want to give you all the info i know of i had a 12 ran externaly i could barely touch it

as others have sead 10X sump volume is all you need i learned that the hard way my sump actually worked better with less flow my 90 is running @540 gph my 150 will be at 920 gph
