    Hello guys and gals!

My brother in law is thinking about buying a HOB skimmer to go on his 125 gallon tank. I've looked up at eshopps but they bigger one they have is rated for 100 gallons, I think.

Are there any manufacturers that produce a skimmer rated for 125 gallon (or more)??

He doesn't have a sump (not enough space for it), hence the hang on back is the best way to go for him.

Care to shoot some links if you know one that works well?

As always, thanks in advice for your help!

Hey, Well I have a Aqua C Remora HOB skimmer, and they make a Pro version that is good up till 120 gallons, so that would most likely work for your brother in law and its not too expensive.

AquaC Remora Pro Hang-On Protein Skimmer with Drain Fitting

That gives you a good idea of the product there.

I run the Coralife 220g Skimmer on my 120g, I love it to death, Nice thing about coralife is it can convert to an In-sump skimmer if that ever does happen in the change of the tanks life.

I agree with the above about the Coralife. 125 is obviously rated for 125, but when tested, it is rated on a low bio-load. So I would also say go with the 220 if you have the budget for it.

For larger tanks I would recommend the Red Sea C-Skim 1800 Advanced Protein Skimmer, but wouldn't be economical for a 125. On bigger systems it would be great.

i hd a red sea prizm pro the large one thy say it will work for tanks up to 300g but i had it on my 125 and you had to mess with the air control nob every day it worked but i would say its best for a tank 100 or less i still have it but i went with a euro reef sump skimmer for it . i did have a coralife skimmer and had in the hagon setup it was rated for a 125g but it didnt pull as much out of the water like the red sea prizm pro did and flodded over a few times so i got rid of it .

i must add that the small version of the red sea prizm are noted to over flow also. but i never had the big one over flow . iwould check the web you may find a deal on a red sea prizm pro , but look for others , aqua -C ,reef octopus ect

Thanks everyone for so many quick replies!

I've been doing some research on the recommended brands. I think the Super skimmer has more punch for the dollar and I found it on ebay for $179 shipped. The aqua-C is a little high on price, I believe and the possibility of converting the Coralife from hang on back to in-sump is a major plus in case of future sump install. I was thinking that if he buys this skimmer, I can help him convert his trickle filter box into a fuge, sump. I believe is big enough for a fuge and it would probably hold close to 6 gallons of extra water volume.

I still need to talk to him about the money he's willing to spend on it, and he may decide not to get one, even though I believe it would help him a lot.

His tank is almost a year old and I think he put it together with LR and livestock from another tank he had. His nitrates are super high (20+). But if we do the refugium with his trickle filter I would add a big ball of chaetomorpha (spelling?) to help him with that. Mine has kept my Nitrates at 0 for the past 2 months since I added it and grows like crazy.

+K for all the good help and advice.

Oh!! Thanks for the heads up on the Sea Clone, cap23244. I looked it up and seems that a lot of people had big problems with it.

Thanks again. I love this place!
