Hello, have had a fish tank my whole life and just started a reef tank and have found that I really like the fish more than the corals so I have been looking around about fish only tank and have found that maybe the fowlr tank would be an even better idea for me since I’m looking to set a tank that that won’t need much in maintenance.
Sump: have separate refugium, or just put refugium stuff in with live rock in the sump...or just go with sump with a refugium and skimmer and have a ton of live rock in the main tank...of go with little live rock in the main tank and have a ton in the sump so the fish have more room to swim…these are some of my ideas so any help would be great
The fish I want to keep for sure in the tank are: imperator angel, powder blue tang, lion fish, Harlequin Tusk, flame angel
Fish optional: blue face angel, maroon clown fish, blue ribbon eel, another dwarf angel, frog fish, puffer fish, Achilles tang, gold rim tang, powder brown tang, green bird wrasse, another wrasse. Of course not all of these fish but just saying what fish I like and what would work best with the fish I want to keep for sure.
Lightings: will for sure never go with corals in this tank so figure go with some normal lights, my ? is should I go with glass top…I read that u need to have gas exchange but If u have an open sump will that be enough of do u need to have the top of the main tank open also?

As u can tell I’m am still new to keep saltwater so def need some help…any advice would be great

blue ribbons are hard to keep i think.
becareful with all the angels as i think some dont get along with there own species.
wrasses are the same as the angels.

Most of the fish that you have mentioned will grow rather large. Because of this, the number of fish that you are able to place in the tank successfully diminishes as the elevated bioload (respiration and waste) increases.
The variety of Angels and Tangs could pose a problem unless the species of fish and/or order that the fish are introduced is taken into consideration!
You do not want to add all the fish at once, and this could cause a problem with introducing more than one same species into the tank at the same time for the best results when it comes to aggressive behavior!
Best of luck with your tank and make sure to do some reading on husbandry and compatibility requirements required by each fish to help you to narrow and limit the fish on your wish list for optimal health of your livestock and success and enjoyment gained by you!

thanx...i have looked into that and figured i could probably only go with those 4 and maybe 1 or 2 more...the angel and eel where a stretch...the dwarf angel i would say are out since the lion fish will probably eat them...maybe a stupid question but if i get a larger sump and put more live rock in it and have more space up in the main tank then will have more room for the fish...is this a stupid idea or something that works well...i understand the bio load and don't plan on putting more fish in b/c of that but just want the fish to be as happy as possible so figure the more room to swim the better...also if i go with those fish can i put some kind of crew like star fish or something to clean the glass and mess with the sand bed?

you could put more, but i think going with a better skimmer would have alot more impact then the live rock on bioload as the skimmer removes waste before it breaks down and the bacteria must remove it.

i would think some type of urchins or snails would be ok for a clean up crew(provided you dont get things with powerful beaks)

If you are going to purchase a Harlequin Tuskfish, then inverts are not to be introduced, unless you plan on feeding the Tuskfish!

thanx i do plan on getting a very powerful skimmer...i have looked around and the main thing i am looking for with the skimmer is to do a good job skimming and have a low maintenance requirement...it sounds like the aqua models are good any other questioned with that area?
