How should I set up the drain so it won't plug or catch a fish?

That loc line will leak onto your floor like that. not a crazy amount but it will drip. imo best bet is to extend the pvc up higher and add a 90 then screw the locline return into that so its over the tank.

I was afraid of that. I like the look, but I suppose water on the floor is something to be avoided. Back to my local plumbing supply store.

Any thoughts on the inlet for the drain?

I think if you leave it the way it is right now it will be kinda loud also.
maybe try to add a durso pipe to the drain. what about running it with one of those strainer type things that come with a bulk head?

I was concerned about whether or not my plumbing was going to work so I hooked everything together, filled it with water and fired her up. It works. It isn't loud at all, but I was using a smaller pump than I plan on (the Quiet One 1200 is on it's way).

I also noticed that the particle board that makes up the top of my stand loves soaking up water. The cut edges will definitely need to be treated before final assembly. Can I just squirt the exposed wood with Krylon or do I need to take more extreme measures to keep out the water?

all its gunna take is a wondering snail to climb up that pipe and get stuck in the drain tube to overflow the tank. i would be more worried about that than the stand.

as for the wood, i spill stuff on my stand all the time and i dont really see anything bad going on with it. if your really worried i know they have wood sealant that is water resistant.

I have a long list of worries and both of those are on it. The overflow definitely needs to be addressed. I was just wondering if the paint would seal the wood or if I need to get something else.
