Is a 14 gallon quarantine tank good enough for one or two tangs? (most like just one tang) I'm planning to use a 14 gallon tank as a quarantine tank for tangs...they're only going to be in there for 3 weeks for observation before I move them into my main 130 gallon tank. My main concern is that they will die in the quarantine tank from the stress of being in a small tank? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not saying don't but it's my opinion that 14 gallons isn't big enough. I tried to QT a silver dollar sized yellow tang in a 29 by itself and the stress on the fish was too much. At first it would cruise from one side to the other constantly, even in the dark. Then it began to feed, became 'edgy', stopped eating and would hide in the pvc pipe. I had to abort the qt process at a little over a week and add it to the dt. He's been fine ever since.

No way i would keep a tang in a 14 gallon QT tank for 3 weeks...i think this is a bad idea....

Are there any alternatives to quarantining the tangs before I put them into my main tank? I'm not sure if Freshwater dipping is a better alternative? I don't want my other fishes to get any diseases. Maybe I should just upgrade to a 29 gallon tank for the quarantine tank? Please Advise!

Man you guys have had some really bad luck with tangs! I really don't see any issues as long as its only temporary.

I put all 3, a Yellow, Kole an hippo into a 15 gallon tank for 3 weeks or so. when I got them they were all about 1.5 to 2" except for the hippo which was about 3".

Now they are all fat and happy in my 75 reef and have been for over 2 years now.

Fresh water Dipping IMO does more damage than putting them into a small tank for any length of time.

I know its bad husbandry, but I've never QT'ed a tang... It always has seemed to work out. I either buy from a good source, or watch the fish at the store for a bit before getting it usually though.

a 29g is fine for a tang for a few weeks, but if its a yellow tang i wouldnt worry about anything, i have a 29g reef and put a Yellow tang in it for a good while, i had to get rid of it because it got to big..........but depending on how big the tang is, you could use a 29g

Yeah, I used to do that too until one day I got a powder blue with marine velvet or some kind of disease that wiped out my entire tank full of tangs :(

Hmmm... I tang I've been checking out is about 4 inches big, do you think that he'll do okay in a 29g for three weeks?

tangs need alot of running space my very baby sail fin has been qt'ed for 2 weeks in my 14gal but i refuse to keep him in any longer hes been ich feel for a week and half been treating copper and rid ich all looks good but i am very lucky cause my boy is very passive and loves to pick all day so he will have fun in the DT today once i get him back in. But it all depends on your fish and i know i wouldn't put 2 tangs in a 14gal
