I just found a local guy with 2 175 watt halides dont know the name of the bulbs or the lamps but there are 2 6 day old 18000k bulbs and 1 new 10000k bulb with ballasts. Its for a DIY hood, and it turns out he didnt do it so they are asking 300$ for the lot.
Would this be a good buy for a 75 or should I hold off and go bigger...say 250 watt?

    This is one of them.

21" depth 75, barely if you have a deep sand bed. I think 250W would be better. I would suggest getting T5HO because you only need 216W to 324W total to get the same lighting abilities except for shimmer.

I should have stated earlier, I plan to incorporate the 4 bulb t5 fixture I use now or use a old dual bulb I have in with the two Halides as some extra actinic supplement. Would this still be shy of enough lighting?

The T5 if it is HO will be doing more for the tank and its inhabitants. I would but the money on a 2 bulb T5HO retrofit if I were you.

i think you will have enough lighting...IIWM tank i would go 250s..but i think you can get away with it, i would also make my sandbed different levels so you have options with placement and different depths..just me tho..

Seems pricey for a generic used setup. You can get a new 250W retrokit for not much more and then you know what your getting.
