Hi, I received 2 175w current usa 14k mogul base bulbs and was wondering if they need uv protection like the double ended bulbs. I have a retrofit 2x 175w halide and 4x54w pc fixture without glass separating the lights from the water.

the glass will filter out UVB and UVC and let about 10% of UVA through... so in other words, the glass filters perfectly!

sorry should have been more clear. you need additional glass between the bulbs and water.

otherwise the zooxanthellae algae on your corals will be killed from UV radiation, your fish will go blind and possibly die, and every time you look at the tank "harmful" UV light will be reflected into your eyes :(
But on the plus side, you wont need a UV sterilizer for your water then

ha ha gotcha. As long as I wear sunblock and some shades I'm good to go8) Thanks for the help! Someone had once told me that 175 bulbs had uv protection incorporated in the glass...must have been back in the day.

i dont think so... if you just put a normal piece of glass between the fixture and your tank it will filter out most of the bad stuff

No, the outer bulb is the shield. I would not put any glass between the bulb and tank if yu have sufficient clearance over the waters surface. My buls are 9" above the water and have been fine for over 6 years.

AZ is correct. Mogul MH bulbs already have the UV shielding in the glass. DE or double ended MH bulbs need a UV shield glass.

Just watch the salt spray. If I had SE I would still put a glass shield to keep salt off the reflectors. I think over time the light you lose from the glass isn't much comparable to salt on the reflectors. You can only clean reflectors so much and they start to tarnish.
