180 Up and Running (Downgraded to 90 Gallon)!

I'm still thinking the lighting over.. So far I have just pulled the feed line up from the basement and are capped off in the white box you see above the tank.. I'm leaning toward 2.175 and 2. 250 and 1. 400 w M/H dead in the center to help with that sheet of Glass Oceanics put's there . Then 4. 6ft VHO or 8. 4ft for actinic. But still have yet to totally make my mind up yet as to what I'll do.. But when I do ): I'll get the transformers sent too me.. and all that heat will be in the basement and mounted on a wall as will the VHO ballast. All will be ran with 240 v. for a primary feed from panel box. The rough part is done pulling the feeds up from the basement I hate that LOL

 

A DSB ? Oh heck NO! not me I was the 1st and only to tell the great Dr 8 or more yrs ago that he was all wrong and all who would listen as to what the future held for them all. I was ran off boards and called the village idiot for saying it LOL No DSB for me ever and a Plenium is more work then I want to deal with also. Festering boil is what I call them.

Very nice! I'm glad to see there are other people who prefer shallow sand beds. I've switched my tanks over to shallow beds and now my reef has 0 nitrates (it used to run 5-10) and my FOWLR tank runs lower nitrates. Shallow beds are just easier to keep clean of debris IMO.

 

Nice set-up/ How come there is no coraline on the rock or id that just how the pic came out?

 

I can see your reasoning as to not having a DSB, but I have one in my 20 cube and no protien skimmer, water changes every 3-4 weeks and I have no diatom or green/undesirable algae and have not even come close to having a problem.
Also have 400# LS in a 240 I maintain and it is doing awesome since set-up. Blastios have doubled in size, green brain is as big as mine (that may not be saying much) and I have only done 2 water changes in 3 months (lazy and I'm not paid-thoguh I am starting to frag). All the corals are doing excellent and the fish eat like pigs (she overfeeds).
In my personal experiance DSB works well as long as there are creatures to keep it stirred like sand-sifting starfish, pistol shrimp, etc.

 

The tank only has base rock in it so the coralline has yet to grow. There are a few pieces of live rock from Tangster's older system in the sump to seed the system. Both he and I have had a lot of bad experiences using live rock so unless it's from a trusted source, we simply won't use it.

As for the DSB debate, I simply won't get into it. Been there, done that, had my butt handed to me too many times and have been called too many names to bother discussing it anymore
