1month into cycling a new tank

Yes, I understand it is not fun catching a fish with rocks in it. With long enough wait time (cycle time), I believe hardy fish such as goby will be okay.

I didn't know that about the ammonia test kit. I will try to test at LFS that uses electronic test equipment.

 

I suggested the microbacter to be used as a method to increase the bacteria and variety in your tank since you're starting with all dry rock. I wasn't suggesting it as a way to speed up the cycle. Hope that clarifies it Cycling is definitely something you want to do it right and the amount of time it takes can be quite variable.
