Hello I'm new to this forum and had a question about which skimmer to go with. I have a 55gal tank and need to repleace my sea clone (i know i know it's the worst lol) I've been doing some research and have narrowed it down to the following.

    Octopus BH-100H
    Eshopps 75H or 100?
    Aqua C

    Thanks a lot, ~Neon~

I would spend the money on a sump and overflow box set.

I would get the octopus, I guess it depends on the model for the Aqua C too.

Welcome to 3reef. Tell us a little more about your tank. Do you have a running sump? Tell us a little about the tank. What do you keep, what do you plan to keep? It all helps us help you.

No sump, as of now I have about 60lbs of live rock. I plan to do polyps, leathers, and some soft coral. As far as fish go I have a yellow eye tang, 2 clowns, a goby, and a cleaner shrimp. I also have a cleaning crew made up of snails and crabs. I will probably add another small fish or two in the future. Thanks!

I have the aqua c. The only think i dont like is the bubble trap, its hard to keep it attached to the maxi-jet. I glued on some suction cups to the back.

Based on the info you have given the best value would be buying a used AquaC Remora with maxi-jet HOB skimmer

I am not familiar with Eshopps so I can't comment on those.

Personally I like the Octopus skimmers on a 55 gallon because the pump is on the outside of the tank. There isn't much room in a 55 to begin with so it's nice to be able to hide the pump on the outside and keep the heat transfer low.
You might want to look into the reef Octopus BH 2000. It's about $50 more expensive than the 100H, but it's much bigger, has a better pump, and is rated at 120 gallons.

There is also a Deltecs but that is way out of the price range of the skimmers you listed, but from what I heard it is far superior to anything you have listed.

started my 55g with that exact same skimmer, I have it sitting in storage as I got a Deltec, Remora was ok, but a more expensive skimmer will destroy its performance & can handle much more stocking. I found that out first-hand when I put the Deltec on the tank. Sometimes you don't know how much better something can be until you get that better something :).

    What's your budget?

The bubble trap is a separate item that you add onto the skimmer correct?
