you could have the trough custom made by a fiberglass company.

Pics would be very helpful. Reading this thread has been really tough because you are getting a lot of blind recomendations. It just seems like this was a freshwater system that someone is trying to make into a saltwater FO or reef. Pictures would be very helpful to know the limiting factors. Also pictures and dimensions of the filtration area proposed. In order to help you I need to know where you want to go with this project!

What livestock are you planning to keep in the tank?
Is all the filtration going to be under the tank?
How are you related to the tank? Owner? Friend of the owner? Hired help?

Agree, Def need some pics and more info. Am I correct in assuming these tanks are live stock free currently?
    +1 to shared filtration
There is a guy that specializes in really large tanks and skimmers... Let me see if I can find the info and I'll post...
+1 to led feasibility? Not sure if they can penatrate well at 5'. If they can they won't be cheap initially. In the long run I'm sure it'll add up to some savings.

    Found it... http://www.aquariumeng.com/#

At one time he was going to start building these custom made skimmers he designed and sell them but not sure if anything ever came from it as the website isn't really functional. The dude custom built a 20k gallon... Yes 20,000 gallon tank and basically all the equipment. Hit the contact link and shoot him an email. He's still very active on another forum so if that doesn't work pm me and I'll see if I can hook you up with him. Been a while since I looked at his thread. Apparently hgtv did an episode on his house so looks like I need to track that down!
