Which is better double ended or standard (mogul?)

Where do you get double ended fixtures?

Well, 3 questions.... do the double ended fixtures from the halogen bulbs work.(I know the ballast is needed, but does the light bulb physically fit?)

    2 answers well maybe 3 ;)
1.) It depends upon the manufacturer of the bulbs. Sometimes the DE are better sometimes the SE are.
2.) Any number of online reef vendors sell them including several of our sponsors. http://www.3reef.com/aquarium-page-Sponsors.html
3.) The halogens will not work on a Metal halide ballast. They will blow up very quickly when you put a 4 thousand volt pulse on a 120v light. If they would even fit in the socket?

Here is a link I found on this question that is pretty informative. I thought I would pass it along as I remembered this thread when I found it. Hope it helps you. Creative Reefing :: View topic - HQI vs. Mogul :)

PS: Read the whole thread because just when you thought you heard it all, there is more. lol Alot of techie lingo. Alot of it seems very over my head hehe. But its getting late. May be that I can make more sense out of the latter part of the thread tommorow. Good luck

Well with out the aid of any links to others opinions I'll just say I have used both and really see or saw any difference between the two. Other then a better growth rate to wards the old Moguls . I like the mogul base lamps more bulb options in the K value and I can have either or so thats not the issue. I just had a 290 set up the guy wanted 250 HQI's I suggested the old Mogul well we put HQI's on both side bulbs and a Mogul in the middle now it seems all of his corals are growing toward the middle pretty much what I found out way back. Then there is the camp that seems to think a 250 HQI will produce as much PAR as a 400 W Mogul LOL well with in less then 3 weeks in the growth rates in the corals in a grow out tank I maintain I have proved that to the Boss man and we stayed at the same wattages just changed out to Mogul bulb.. As I said I just installed 3 400 watt's on our 180 Saturday and as I said I have either or I chose the Mogul because they out produce The ballast I have will fire both types cost or equipment was not a factor. As I said Its just based on lots of yrs using both types with about any coral you can think of.. Good Luck

    From your posted link.....

I have no desire to register to that forum so I can't comment on it.
I can however give you links to sanjays reef lighting page and reefkeeping magazine that will show data to support what I said in my statement above :)

I have not used the DE bulbs so I can't make a statement like Tangster's :)
But, I would go with experience any day. :thumbs_up

Thanks Tangster. Thats says alot. And would make me happy as the retro I have been looking at is a mogul type... Just one question was the HQI and Mogul you compared the same K value?
And also, please don't think I am douting your experiance, but it would seem to me that light from EACH (both) end bulbs would shine some what in to the range of the center bulbs position.. The center bulb could do the same to each end bulb, but there is only ONE center bulb to effect each end bulb. This would mean more lumens in the middle. In theary this would mean that even if all bulbs were the same. You would still have more light in the middle.
