someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but with a "DSB" it isnt supposed to get disturbed due to the high chance of nitrogen release, that actually sounds to me like exactly what happens, jawfish moves the sand, get a bit of a nitrogen bubble, it will literally poison his gills and kill him, it makes it so he cant breathe. A fish drowning in water

maybe there is something to it...but the question is; is there any way to prevent it?

I'm still a little on the iffy side - i would assume this would have been discussed before if this was an issue with these kind of fish but I have been wrong before

Poor pete (my jawfish) hes gone now :(

well maybe its like a rare thing and we're just on the ****ty side of probability? I think I will try to get another one and just see what happens. I mean, everything in my tank should be fine, everything tests out anyway. now getting another, that will be the hard part.

Either way, it looks like it was something that affected their breathing in some way right? no other outward signs of disease and it was pretty sudden. And in our case not ammonia (which can affect breathing) as I think both of our readings were zero at the time of death. Maybe just get a few more burrowing snails for good measure?

Have you asked around at your LFS to see if they might know what happened? I'll ask around at mine sometime this week.

No I haven't but the dudes at my LFS seem to be clueless with most questions I ask anyway - useless

I just saw your conversation about the jawfish and am having a similar problem. I posted on the asap but got little help. I also have a yellowhead jawfish, about 5 days ago he just stopped eating. He was totally fine until this time - he still looks fine - can't see any disease. He just stays in his burrow and peeks out. He looks hungrily at the food but won't eat. I don't know what to do. I don't know how much longer he can live without eating. I have a 29 gallon tank with two clown fish and snails. I take the water to be analyzed every few months always check out fine. What is going on with these jawfish?

Sorry to hear you are having issues like i did a few months ago! :(

I actually purchased 2 more after this thread and they are doing fine now?!?! Nothing in the tank has changed and there have been no issues with any symptoms of the past so I really don't know what to tell you. Have you tried different foods to entice the fish (mine love mysis and brine)? Otherwise as long as your params are fine, then it could be what I experienced (still have no clue) and only time will tell I guess - sorry :( K+
