2 small or 1 big

i noticed the price goes up a lot depending on the length of the lighting system. I have a 7 foot tank, and 6 foot seems to be the longest the units are made. Is it a good idea to consider 2 3 foot units for my tank?

 

yes do two 3 feet fixtures like a 6 bulb tex light would be a good match

 

how many gallons and what are the over all dement ions of the tank

If it is 200+ gallons, are you sure of your deminsions? A typicall 240g is 8'x2'x2'. And yes two 36" fixture would work good, not great but, good.

If it is a 240g like what I have it is 96"x24"x24" and I use two 48" fixtures. Mine has two 250 watt MH and two T5's in each fixture giving me total coverage of the entire tank. Keep in mind it really depends on the type of lighting you use also. Another way to look at it is MH bulbs typically cover a 2' (24") x 2' (24") range and then the wattage will determine it's depth. For a 2' deep tank I suggest a 250w MH bulb.

 

I would get a 4ft and a 3ft fixture to get the best coverage.
