Hi everyone, a few weeks ago my son dumped about half a can of food in my 55 gal. My wife got must of it out, and when I got home from work I did a water change. I have child locks on my cabinet but he figured ou how to get into it so I moved everything out of reach. I lost all of my hermits but one and all but about six snails. Well yesterday he found some bread crumbs in the pantry and decided that the fish needed it, so he poured all of it in. The warden,(my wife), got most of it out but when I got home the water was cloudy. I did a water change last night and it looked a little better. I've got to get more salt and do another one today. I didn't see but 2 snails this morning and I don't know about the crab. So the first thing I have to do is restock my clean up crew, I was saving up for a skimmer but that's on the back burner for now. I'm trying to teach my litle boy about the fish, I guess he really paid attention when I fed them. Oh well, its allgood, he loves to look at them, less tv time. Thanks for listening to me whine a lil

Try to run some carbon. It will help get the crap from the food out. Any chemicals etc. Not sure whats in bread crumbs, but its probably not reef safe.

A skimmer would definitely help a ton. The inverts are sensitive to nitrates, and that's most likely what was taking them out (due to the foods plus not having a skimmer). So continue saving, do not put something like that on "the back burner".
As an FYI, Russia is paying $9,000 per child due to low birth rates. Could solve both of your issues. Might be something to consider.
    ;) :p

I have no children, but imagine that securing a tank from them wouldn't be impossible.

I assume your tank is up against a wall? If so, the back is safe. I can think of a half-dozen ways to secure the front. Forget child locks. How about ADULT locks? :) The top is slightly more difficult, but if you have a canopy, I'd guess that access to the tank from the top could be effectively prevented. You could make it so that the child couldn't access the water's surface without physically removing the entire canopy. Of course if you don't have a canopy, those kids are well versed in the use of tools--such as a chair; so a canopy might be a must in the kids/reef tank equasion.

Kids say the darndest things. Kids do the darndest things. Kids are the darndest things! :)

So I lived in Spain for 3 years. To keep gypsies out of their yards people would line the tops of their walls (garden walls) with glass inlay.....right into the grout. Quite effective :shifty:
