20 gallon

Ive got a 55 gal display, and a 125gal discus tank... so im not completely new to the hobby..

I wanna convert my sons 20 gal guppy to a tank for a mantis shrimp but more immediately to move a flame angel that is picking my corals like crazy to it to get it out of the main 55 display....

Im planning on using some water from the main during (during a water change) and some premix - live rock will transfer from lfs and from my sump, so im not expecting much of a cycle before things are "fish ready" -

My question is filtration...... do I REALLY need a protien skimmer for this tank? Ive got a one in my main sump but Im not planning on building a sump for the 20 gallon....

What are my options for filtration? Will a good quality HOB work?

nope for a fish only tank not at all. If you feel the need to get one the bak pacs, aqua cs and octos are all good

 

Thinking about going major overkill with like a biowheel 400gph unit -

Ive definately got plenty of macro going in my other sump to spare some, guess just really need a light ehh?
Had some grap culpera as a hitchhiker and put it my sump and it took off...

 

i have a deltec mce 300 in my 26 bowfront Its honestly in my opinon the best HOB skimmer out there

 

i have the biggest biowheel i could find on fostersandsmith. it keeps my tank really clean.

 

Since I am not planning on doing a protein skimmer right off on this Mantis tank, should I run an airstone into the filter system to help oxy the water up?
