The 4 cylinder is a gutless piece of crap. The V6 provides a surprising amount of power, and AWD is always a good idea. The Escape should easily tow 2 jet skis, and was, at least in my experience, very comfortable.

get the v6 and get 4wd, the escape doesnt have a lot of weight sometimes on the smaller suv's when pulling something back up a ramp getting traction to get back up the ramp is the hardest thing, I have the 4.0 powered explorer sport trac and it will not pull my boat (weighs about 4000lbs on the trailer) but our 5.4L triton powered expedition pulls it just fine but I do have to use 4wd if the ramp is wet

What year sport trac? The new ones even with the v6 can tow over 5000 lbs when the tow package is added.

I had a 4wd explorer sport (2000) with the 4.0 SOHC (same as the sport trac, even looked like one from the front but only a 2 door with a hatch back) and it towed 4000lbs quite easily. I used it to tow 3500 lb boats on many occasions. I did however have 4.11 gears in the axles though from the factory. Most have 3.73.

Obvoiusly 4wd with towing a heavier boat can be an issue, but the escape is front wheel drive and usually has less issues at the boat launch due to that. 4wd can't hurt if you need it and can't for some reason get traction. Pulling 2 jet skiis out even with a fwd won't be an issue unless you have a slippery launch, or just do shore launches. The 4wd will lower your mpgs, but that is a question you have to answer. Also, a 4wd suv costs a lot more to insure than a 2wd one. Add in your young age and that you are a male under 25 and your rates will definitely go up.

it's been mentioned a few times... the smaller model might be able to pull 2 ski's out of the water... maybe it'll be too slippery... That's not something you'll always know ahead of time and nothing sucks more than having to abandon a ski to go get a bigger truck ... or asking some stranger to pull it out for you...

seems like an odd risk to be willing to take IMO...

You can safely tow above the manufacturer's suggested limits if you have the right hitch work. It would really depend upon how much you tow, and how often you tow it. I exceed my truck's listed towing capacity by a fair margin, but I use anti-sway bars and weight distribution bars on my hitch.

A quality brake controller is a must as well.

You can even get something like a "Hensley Hitch" that mimics the sort of coupling that big rigs use.

Getting a boat out of the water can be more of a traction issue that a weight issue, so the AWD would be a good option.
