OK, I know this post is a bit old, but I came across it when googling about the tank I have in my son's nursery (this exact tank). It currently houses 4 African Cichlids, but I really, really, really want to convert it to a reef tank. I am brand spanking, painfully new to saltwater keeping (as in, my experience is "Ooohh, preeetty" when looking at pictures.) I do know that I need a protein skimmer, and I do know that the light for this tank is not sufficient for keeping corals. I also know that I DO NOT want the sump set up like the OP has. A protein skimmer that hangs off the back would be sufficient for this tank? Also, my big issue, and the reason I was googling, is because I need help finding a light for this tank. I don't know anything about lighting, electrical stuff (I had to ask my husband what a ballast was). I was hoping someone could just tell me what light to buy. LOL. Here are pics of my current set up, it is freshwater now, with the Cichlids, but it is the exact same tank.

This is interesting, whats wrong with my sump set up? its the easiest/cleanest way to add equipment such as skimmers, heaters, etc...

You don't "NEED" a skimmer to have a reef tank, but it does make things easier. As for lighting, this could go round and round. Maybe you should post a new thread asking some of these questions so that people will see it. You posted this a couple of days ago, so i don't know, maybe you already started another thread.

Just took a few pictures today, and thought I would post a couple. Picture maybe a little sandy/hazy because I had just done some work. And yes that is gha, and I am working on that.

Got some pictures to add from some stuff i picked up this week. Got a pink birdsnest frag and a velvet tuxedo urchin along with a few snails and a emerald crab i cant get a picture of.

Had a spare magfloat just sitting around from an old tank so i used that to make a DIY frag rack.

When i bought them at a local frag swap thru GIRS ( greater iowa reef society) the guy just called them bright green zoas. LOL. I just tried to get an ID on coral pedia but came up with nothing.
