Looking for some advice on my JBJ 28 Nano I have recently started up. It will be a reef tank, with the focus most likely SPS, along with some Zoa's & LPS (no softies!). I have 30 lbs dry rock, and 15 lbs live rock, 3-5" sand bed. So far the tank has a Bluespotted Jawfish, some Zoa's and a snail only CuC. Here are the fish & inverts I am considering:

    (2) Blood Red Fire Shrimp

    (1) BSJ (Opistognathus rosenblatti) - definite; already in the tank

    (1) Wrasse - would love a flasher, but the consensus is they should be in a 30" long tank minimum. Otherwise, either a Pink-Streaked Wrasse or a Possum Wrasse.

    One of the following:

    • Gold Assessor Basslet (Assessor flavissimus)
    • Swales Swissguard / Pacific Candy Basslet (Liopropoma swalesi) - My LFS actually has one in stock!
    • Yellow Candy / Twinspot Hogfish (Bodianus bimaculatus)
    • Hawkfish - Not sure if any of them would be suitable or not for a 28 nano
And either a Purple or Helfrichi Firefish

Fish would be added in this order. I have no experience with any of the above fish, except the BSJ obviously. Any help is appreciated. 4 total fish, but depending on the "3rd" option, all would be 3" or under except the BSJ at 3.5".

    TIA :)

IMHO these fish should NOT go into a 28g period.

    Gold Assessor Basslet (Assessor flavissimus)
[*]Swales Swissguard / Pacific Candy Basslet (Liopropoma swalesi) - My LFS actually has one in stock!
[*]Yellow Candy / Twinspot Hogfish (Bodianus bimaculatus)
    [*]Hawkfish

I figured most would be borderline. The Swales is listed as 10gal minimum though? Any reason why they would not be suitable?

After doing some more research, it seems this type of basslet is ideal for nano's due to how secretive they can be. And even though it is labeled as a Swalesi, I actually think it is a "Reynold's" Basslet (it has red stripes). They seem to behave identical to the Swalesi. If I do get him, he would be next due to how secretive they seem to be.

You have a Blue Spot Jawfish? That's really cool, I hear they're really expensive. So is the Helfrichi, but they're really cool fish. I think they would be fine together.

    Yup ;D

They are pricy ($140 from my LFS; LA has them for $130 IIRC), but he is by far my favorite fish! Awesome personality :)

My LFS has a couple Helfrichi's, but haven't decided if they are worth the extra $70 over the Purple ($99 vs. $29).

I am leaning towards the following revised list:

    BSJ
    Reynold's Basslet
    Pink Streaked Wrasse
    Firefish (Purple or Helfrichi)

The wrasse actually looks pretty cool too, and considering it doesn't grow too big, it should be fine in the tank as well. Heck, maybe I might get one; thanks for thinking of getting it for your tank.
