Well... I recommend not putting that many fish in the tank in the first place however you didn't ask for that information, a sump would be ideal for added water volume and something like a filter sock.

A good amount of live rock wouldn't hurt. 1.5lbs per gallon is ideal.

I don't have room for a sump. Will a hob filter be enough? I have 2 marinland hob filters. Will I need a skimmer? I'm going to put 50lbs of LR in it and 2-3" of sand.

What size are the Marinelands? FTR, I have one Whisper 60 on my 29H reef tank with no sump and no skimmer. However, I do only have four smaller fish. For a FOWLR, I would recommend a HOB nano skimmer.

    1 is a marineland 150 and 1 is a whisper 20. Both are 20-30 gallons, 150gph.

I would go 4, maybe 5 fish max. I don't think a HOB filter would be enough for 10 fish (or the tank size). 50 lbs of rock will take a lot of swimming room away, but will be great for filtration.

    The fish I want are
    3 blue reef chromis
    2 kauderns cardinals
    2 b/w clownfish
    1 starry blenny
    1 yellow head jawfish

What do you think about the taam Rio nano skimmer?

Remove the cardinals and chromis and you have a good group, imo. The bio load will be absurd with those 9 fish.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !

So you asked I am going to post it.

No skimmer nor filtration will work on a 29 gallon tank with 9-10 fish. I have a 28 gallon tank so I know of what I speak.

You need to seriously rethink your stocking or set up a bigger tank.

A million or more hobbyist have tried the same thing, it does not work., unfortunately it works out really bad for the fish.

This is how that stocking list will go.

1: You will end up with one chromis with an attitude.
2: You will end up with one Cardinal with an attitude.
3: The yellow jaw fish will die of starvation inside 3 months.
4: You will have aggression issues.

Think more like a pair of clowns, one Cardinal, one blenny.
