The tank is starting to clear up. Added ammonia Thursday and has been at 2.0 ppm but today noticed my nitrates hit 5.0 ppm but nitrites are still 0. Is this weird?

Thanks Delly! I am using the Marineland reef ready leds with built in timer. Got a great deal on it form marine depot thanks to their price match policy. Ended up paying $180 for the 24-26" fixture. It is a nice low profile light and the out put is decent. Not too sure what types of coral you plan on but this tank is going to be mainly fowlr maybe a few softies, shrooms and zoas.

Is it common to see nitrates before nitrites show up on a test kit? I tested my salt water mix thats in a brute and the nitrates are 0 so maybe its from the dry rock

Assuming you did not use a bacterial supplement, your bio-filter hasn't even begun to develop yet, so yes, the nitrates must've come from the rocks or sand. That's not a big issue; they should be leached out by the time your cycle is complete. :)

I used Dr. Tims one and only. I added it on Thursday with 2ppm ammonia chloride. Ammonia dropped to 0.5 today and my nitrites made an appearance today at 0.5. nitrates are between 5 and 10.

I was a bit skeptical about using Dr. tims one and only but figured I would give it a shot. I am now a true believer! This stuff is working great so far for me. Yesterday was day for and my had dropped to 0.5 and nitrites where at 0.5. Yesterday I added more ammonia chloride to bring the levels back up to 2ppm. Tonight my ammonia levels were down to 1ppm and my nitrites have hit 1.0! Anyone else have success with this product?

There are still a lot of nay-sayers who base their opinions on outdated tests and reviews, but as flaws are discovered, improvements are made- that's how science works. Personally, I've never used any bacterial supplements, but I've heard enough evidence to accept the fact that they do work.

BTW, Good luck with your new tank. :)
