    Hi,

I'm looking at powerheads for my first (50g) tank.

I've read that two powerheads will give better flow than one. Some people believe having just a powerhead is better because you don't have two little motors producing heat.

The guy at the LFS said I should go for a Koralia 1400 GPH. I can get that online for 54$ or I can get two 750 GPH for 37$ (74$).

Is it worth it/good to go with two smaller ones?

    Thanks

I would definitely go with 2 smaller ones rather than one large one. Much more options with flow.

i would go with the 2 smallers (i have 2 750's...not in use tho). you can angle them so there is fewer/no dead spots. with only one you would have to make sure you are getting flow to the top, front and back. depending on how your return is, trying to push water into all the nooks and crannies with one PH will be near impossible.

While we're at it, can you suggest a good budget pump for my 50g?

    Thanks

Are we talking return pumps? I like Mag pumps myself..mine hasn't let me down after 3 years. Probably a 3 or 4 would be good? Not sure on the exact gallons per hour on those.

Mag drive aren't cheap... I was looking at them but I don't really know...

    A mag drive 350 will give me 210 gph @ 4 feet. That seems low doesn't it? It's 75$.

    A 500 is 320 gph @ 4 feet for 92$...

I ordered the powerheads, I will get some base rock and sand from the LFS and get started like that... In a couple of weeks, I will get the sump and pump + the overflow.

your pump will depend on your overflow capacity. mag's are prolly the best in the midrange price. you could go cheaper, but you will pay twice as much in the long run and that a promise and a guarantee!
