I like the Rio pumps. I'm using one for my return right now and can't even tell it's on it's so quiet.

I'm almost convinced on the mag but I will read about the Rio as well.

I plan to buy an overflow box on ebay from pvcfish. It says 1200gph. I like the look of it and I bet that if I build it myself, it will end up costing more than buying it online.

I just haven't decided anything about the return... I'm not sure I want a return line over the edge and if I drill a hole, I want something elegant inside the tank.

I swear by my Mag 3 for my return pump. I've tried/had/still have others but would not hesitate to get another Mag. You could go cheaper and may not have any issues doing so, but I'd recommend the Mag. You will never regret it.

1200 gph sounds awful big for a 50. You could get by with something much smaller. The bigger your overflow..the bigger your return pump. If they don't have enough water going through them they gargle pretty bad. I have a 300 gph overflow on my 40 breeder. I admit I wouldn't mind a little more, but not that much more.

It is 1200 gph with the two bulkhead, I could use just one.

The way it is setup, the bulkhead comes out to a T. Apparently, this is very silent.

In any case the overflow cannot drain more than what the pump is bringing up... But I understand your point about not putting enough water through the pipe.

    +1.
I LOVE my Eshopps overflow (300gph) and my Mag 3 return on my 38 gallon tank. Works wonderfully and have never had a problem in over 2 years.

Don't skip on your return pump, it will cost you far more when it fails and your not home to save your tank.
