How big is your sump? I think people recomend 10x sump volume I believe. That always seemed slow to me though.

This from tank to sump or up from return pump? You gotta be careful with return pump plumbing because of head pressure.

I decided on 1-1.5 inch pipe but am now in the decusion of what type of overflow to get an how nuch of a return I need. but the origional thought eas to have a closed loop with nothing but 1/2 inch pipe and would that still be an option.

Use 1.5" on your overflow and 1" with a ball valve for your return. You could go with a Hydor Rio+ 2500 for a return pump this will give you about 750gph flow. You then put a T on the bottom of your overflow to the sump with a ball valve on the refuge side to regulate flow to the fuge. Put your return section in the middle with both your skimmer and fuge sections feeding it. Drill your tank for both the OF and return and put a lockline Y on the inside of your tank for the return to disperse in two directions. Hope this helps.;)
