hello,my name is fotis,im from greece
i have set up a 300l saltwater aquarium. its going to be a nice reef.my system run for about a month and a half.
actually i had a nano reef 50 l and now this.
so my system contains the old rock and fishes and a new rainfordi, some hermits(3), a lyshymata, 4 corals, and a star fish.
for filtration just carbon and phosphguard..no biological filtration just the rock...
there is no dsb .. just 4-5 cm of live aragonite.
i have 2 wavemakers(5000l/h 3000l/h),the output of the filter, and my old pumb which is about 1000l/h.i have a boyu external hang on skimmer 1200l/h.
my lighting: 2*150watt MH 14000K and 2T5 actin blue.
    my tests show:
    Mg 1300
    Ca 430
    Kh 12
    Salinity 1026
    Po4 0
    NH3 0
    No2 0
    No3 10ppm
Well .. i just received my skimmer today..(all these days passed the system was working with the old skimmer)..so it doesn't remove the waste yet..i works perfect but doesnt remove in the cup.when i turn the pump to give more power..then my cup just filling with water...so ...do i have to wait some days in order to start working as i know the skimmer works...?(i dont know if i made my self clear...:-[ ).
and something else... i have the brown algae all over the sand and somewhere else too...as i know this is diatom...should i wait till this goes off or do i have to make a water change now...?thnxxx

algae and diatoms are perfectly normal for a new tank, they should go away on their own. If they don't then you know you have something out of balance, probably your nitrates and phophates, but wait to see what happens first. You could do a water change now, as long as your tank has finished cycling. I would do no more than 20% now.

a skimmer needs some time to break in, all the tubing and plastic will develop a slime, will make water move more smoothly through it. also it needs time to clean its self of the oils left over from manufacturing, these oils will inhibit skimming.

diatom algae is stage most tanks go through when cycling. they use silicates, once they use them all up they will stop replicating and die. if they don't go away or get really bad you may need to look into whats in your tank or your husbandry to find the problem. if you used play sand you may develop problems with diatom algae.

sand you buy from a hardware store or toy store that goes in sand boxes, the kind that little kids play in. really it doesn't have to be play sand it can be any sand that has silicates in it. if you got you sand from a pet store your safe. but if you buy from another store make sure you look at the make up

your diatoms are fine just let the tank be for now and just keep checking your water params . That will go away on there own in about a week or so . Dont stress about it , I know the sand dont look as pretty as it did when you put it in there .
