I took it out and cleaned the whole filter it was pretty gunked up inside. i took out the wheel . put it back in justfor circ. and carbon, -biowheel
also added the diy over flow for skimmer works 10x better.

Reef_guru originally cited the Bio-Wheel as an issue, but there was some confusion as to what exactly that was. I believe it is mainly used in freshwater systems. I have heard from several different LFS that the "wheel" part is a bacteria heaven--exactly what Reef_guru said.. so it is an important point to consider when reducing your nitrates.

 

I had to read this thread a few times to stay straight...My question is to lunatik, why are you using bioballs? They are a known nitrate factory. I had a 40G SeaClear System II, built in wet/dry filtration; bioballs,always had a nitrate problem. When I got my 75G system II, instead of using the bioballs I filled the area up with LR instead. I have about 85LBS of LR as my filtration w/ no skimmer. My nitrates have stayed at 5ppm since. just my experience.

 

I have always used bio balls, doesnt mean that they are the best, and never had a problem before. Maybe Im wrong, but I dont see the point of having more LR in the wetdry/sump when I have it in the display. I believe my issue with no3 is that my water flow is very fast(turn over) and its not giving the wet/dry enough "time" to filter properly. Having said this, I could be wrong. My other tank that I had before this one had a much slower flow with bio balls and I never had an issue with no3. I will look into that kimmy but at $5.00 a pound($5x85lbs=$425.00) I think I'll stay with the 20ppm or just buy a refuguim. Not to mention, If I would spend that kind of money on "rocks", You would have an extra roommate real soon. If you know what I mean;D Thanks for your input and happy holidays, Luna

 

yes you info was helpful thank you again. IF it solved my problem not sure yet about to do a test tonight. ither way the day after christmas im gonna be getting a tank and pump to start up a fuge. so ill def have some questions on that soon.
I also may be getting a 75 gallon with oak stand and oak hood from my dad for free. he is getting out of the hobby as im getting in good timing. hes got the 75 gallon filled wiht 99 cent guppies, i yell at him every time im over there to put some thing else in it or give it to me. He has had every thing i can think of in there from guppies, to cichlids,saltwater, and even large mouth bass and blue gills. the bass were great me and my friends used to fish from my couch. feeding time was insane.

 

Lunatik...I am not saying go out and buy 85lbs of LR, you already have 60 to 80 ish lbs. The general rule is lbs per gallon, bump your LR total to 90Lbs and you really shouldn't need a wet/dry filter. Something else I have read before and tried (worked for a while) you can rinse/wash your bioballs. NOT all of them at once, but like a handfull or 2 with water you remove during a water change. That helped bring mine down , I just got tired of grabbing them out and getting crap all over my hands. Can wet/dry's be modified to accomidate a sock? Does anyone know? Or do they come that way already?

 

Hi Kimmy, I have done that too and Cleaned out(sludge) the whole wet/dry system about every month or so. I'm starting to think that I just have too many corals and fish, Im over loaded. As to the ratio of LR/gals is 1.25-1.75 lbs of LR per gals of water. BTW, what is a "sock"?
